As an emerging recording artist, this is a very exciting time in my life. The future is full of possibilities and I feel like many of my lifelong dreams are starting to come true, one small piece at a time.

For me, the art of living is a fascinating, mysterious and profoundly captivating process, but if you’re paying attention, it’s also filled to overflowing with hope and encouragement for what tomorrow may bring.

Contracting meningitis, suffering from an aneurism and losing my memory due to cognitive trauma were extremely difficult. But in retrospect, the recovery process connected me with my inner muse in a way that would not have been possible otherwise. It also gave me the strength to redefine my life and the will to share the healing power of music with others. It can be hard to see the bright side of unexpected challenges, but I can tell you from personal experience, that adversity is often life’s way of putting on the breaks and steering you down a new and better road.

If your life is challenging right now, and I know it is for so many people, my advice is simple, be strong, persevere, love those around you and you too will look back someday and see only blessed opportunities.

Adversity is often required before changing course and setting off again, only this time, down the road you were meant to be on.

Iglesias de Honduras quieren prohibir show de Ricky Martin

Ricky Martin tiene planeado presentar su espectáculo 'Música + Alma + Sexo' como parte de su gira mundial 2011 en Honduras el próximo 16 de octubre, pero podría no hacerlo, si la Iglesia logra su cometido.

De acuerdo a la agencia Notimex, la Confraternidad de Iglesias Evangélicas de ese país ha solicitado al gobierno que no autoricen el concierto del boricua, alegando que su show y el artista mismo atentan contra la moral y las buenas costumbres.

"Nos preocupa el mensaje y ejemplo que se transmiten en cada uno de los eventos que se organizan dirigidos a nuestra juventud", explican en su carta dirigida al Ministerio del Interior.

An Irish farmer who had given Rihanna permission to use his grain field to film her new music video shut down the production on Monday and chastised the pop singer for her "inappropriate" wardrobe.

Rihanna, 23, was dancing in a red handkerchief bikini when Alan Graham, 61, noticed her and drove over in his tractor to put a stop to things.

"I have an ethos and I felt it was inappropriate," Graham told the BBC. "I requested them to stop and they did."

Graham said he granted permission for Rihanna and her film crew to use his field even though he wasn't familiar with the often scantily-clad Grammy winner, whose hits include "S&M" and "Disturbia."

The shoot, for Rihanna's new single "We Found Love," has resumed in a different location, according to reports.

The two parted on good terms, according to Graham, shaking hands as he went on his way.

"I wish no ill will against Rihanna and her friends," he said later. "Perhaps they could acquaint themselves with a greater God."

The American Latino Media Arts Award, or ALMA Award is a distinction awarded to Latino performers (actors, film and television directors, musicians, and designers) who promote positive portrayals of Latinos in the entertainment field. In Spanish, the word alma means spirit or soul.

Created in 1995 by the National Council of La Raza (NCLR), it takes over from the previous Bravo Awards. The awards are part of NCLR's strategy to counter the alleged negative stereotyping of Latinos in U.S. entertainment. The awards are given during an annual ceremony generally held in the summer. The awards festival is sometimes referred to as the "Latin American Oscars" in North America.

The 2011 ALMA Awards was Co-hosted by Eva Longoria and George Lopez, the telecast will celebrate the entertainers who have upheld and promoted a socially proactive image of Hispanic culture in today’s media.

Winners of the ALMA Awards will be determined by evaluating votes cast; box office, Nielsen, and Billboard rankings; and in consultation with the NCLR ALMA Awards Production Leadership Team.

After it was announced Machado had won Miss Brasil 2011 she was booed by the audience for unknown reasons. In the days after the pageants it was revealed that Machado had been booed by the audience after she won because she had previously appeared in a topless photoshoot.

Machado was met by loud booes during the preliminary competitions on September 8, mixed with cheers from the audience of mainly local Brazilians. A few hours after the preliminary competitions Machado tweeted, “Respect is something good, and we all appreciate it. I work hard, seriously, and I have high morals. The first big Labor Day in the United States was observed on September 5, 1882, by the Central Labor Union of New York. It was first proposed by Peter J. McGuire of the American Federation of Labor in May 1882

Oregon was the first state to make it a holiday in 1887. By the time it became a federal holiday in 1894, thirty states officially celebrated Labor Day. Following the deaths of a number of workers at the hands of the U.S. military and U.S. Marshals during the Pullman Strike, President Grover Cleveland reconciled with the labor movement. Fearing further conflict, legislation making Labor Day a national holiday was rushed through Congress unanimously and signed into law a mere six days after the end of the strike.The September date originally chosen by the CLU of New York and observed by many of the nation's trade unions for the past several years was selected rather than the more widespread International Workers' Day because Cleveland was concerned that observance of the latter would stir up negative emotions linked to the Haymarket Affair, which it had been observed to commemorate. All U.S. states, the District of Columbia, and the territories have made it a statutory holiday.

The form for the celebration of Labor Day was outlined in the first proposal of the holiday: A street parade to exhibit to the public "the strength and esprit de corps of the trade and labor organizations", followed by a festival for the workers and their families. This became the pattern for Labor Day celebrations. Speeches by prominent men and women were introduced later, as more emphasis was placed upon the economic and civil significance of the holiday. Still later, by a resolution of the American Federation of Labor convention of 1909, the Sunday preceding Labor Day was adopted as Labor Sunday and dedicated to the spiritual and educational aspects of the labor movement.

Exercise and Depression

The bad news is that 19-million Americans are affected by depression. And now the good news: A study was just published that concluded that exercise, along with medication, can relieve the symptoms of serious depression.

An extensive four-year study by the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center tested people between 18 to 70 who had been suffering from depression for an average of seven years and found significant breakthroughs.

The people were split into two groups and were put through an exercise regimen that lasted 12 weeks. After the circuit, nearly 30% of all participants experienced a full remission, and another 20% showed extreme improvements.

Those are fantastic numbers -- particularly the ones who felt a full recovery -- as most patients who solely take anti-depressant pills typically feel improved but rarely get back to their pre-depression state.

It’s just the latest good reason to get on a regular schedule of exercise.

With over 2,000 nip-and-tucks, this mid-gen "facelift" could, and would by most othmanufacturers, be billed a completely new model. But this is Mercedes-Benz, and with predictably austere accuracy this is officially a facelifted C-Class, albeit created by Stuttgart’s finest team of engineering surgeons.

Needless to say we lost count after a handful of fairly obvious tweaks and resorted to taking Mercedes' word that there were 2,000-odd -- well, we were in the sun-soaked Canary Islands after all.

The C-Class is Mercedes' big-seller. Shifting a cool $8.5 million since 1982, a healthy $1 million of that has been from the current 2007-gen model. It’s the most popular Mercedes ever and with BMW and Audi set to release their all-new 3-Series and A4 rivals early in 2012, Merc has pinned its hopes on the reliability and familiarity the C-Class has always thrived on.

PERFORMANCE

While Europe gets to choose from seven different engines, ranging from the C180’s entry-level 1.8-liter 156 hp gas engine to the C350’s 3.5-liter 306 hp V6 range-topper -- and a flurry of frugal diesels in between -- there are only two options to pick from on the new C-Class menu stateside.

Of course, our pick is the full-fat C350 V6 Sport. Surprisingly it’s also labeled a "Blue Efficiency" engine, as is every new C-Class heart, and it boasts a bonus 34 hp and 31% better fuel consumption over the previous gen C350.

The updated 7G-Tronic Plus auto box has a big part to play in the C350’s efficiency gains which also doesn’t use any more fuel than a 6-speed manual box would.

DESIGN

It’s far from a radical departure but the improvements become more apparent the more time you spend with it -- though a head-turner it’ll never really be.

Swept-back new headlamps and a re-profiled grille and air scoops kick things off stylistically, provoking a more toned, more sporty signature for the 2011 C-Class' aesthetic.

Stuffed with 10 new state-of-the-art safety features we won’t bore you with, on-board internet, full-color instrument cluster graphics and loads of soft-grain leather and soft-touch plastics, this new C-Class is doing a surprisingly good impression of the uber-posh CLS.

Sport spec gains a bold grille with an integral three-pointed star smack in the middle, a sporty 3-spoke steering wheel (stolen from the CLS) and brushed aluminum trim juxtaposed with a high-gloss black ash finish. An AMG styling pack, if you can’t wait for (or afford) the imminent fire-breathing C63 AMG, can also be optioned. It won’t make the C go any faster -- it’ll just look like it might.

The C has moved on. It’s still no game-changer but crucially it doesn’t confuse what it offers -- smooth riding luxury -- over its direct German rivals. The everyman’s Merc has evolved into something seemingly designed for the elite, and in all guises has succeeded in putting first class back into the C-Class.

There’s no question this silky V6 is rapid yet not in a racy or overtly keen driver kind of way. Power delivery is predictably refined and the pliant carry-over chassis from the last C-Class keeps things rolling in the well-established and class-leadingly comfortable manner this Merc has always achieved.

Dynamically speaking, it trails the BMW 335i M Sport but that’s only because its balance is notably biased toward greater luxury and refinement.

St Barachiel in the Catholic Church is associated with Saturday, although this is not an official designation by the Church. Barachiel is also traditionally associated with the month of February and the Zodiacal sign Pisces. It's hardly the stuff of quotidian beauty, so it's perhaps not surprising that the new V Spain cover is worrying some over its apparent glamourisation of the victimisation of women.

The Sebastian Faena shoot is an homage to provocative Spanish film director, Pedro Almodovar, whose dark humour laces his many movies.

Green ropes and bright yellow duct tape restrain the model, who lies on a pink sheet wearing pieces from the Louis Vuitton Fall 2011 collection.

Taking the story of Tie Me Up, Tie Me Down, Mr Almodovar's most popular title, the contentious shoot is a nod to the story of a psychiatric patient who, in a desperate attempt to make a porn star his wife, ends up holding the woman hostage.

She eventually submits and learns to love the mentally unstable protagonist in a Stockholm syndrome-esque twist.

The mix of high fashion and contentious subject matter has left some readers offended.

At fashiongonerogue.com, reader Chelsea said: 'This editorial makes me feel uncomfortable. Black woman tied up with tape over her mouth? I'm just not into it.'

Other fashion forums spoke of victimisation and bondage gone too far.

Ms Campbell sees no harm in the dark, suggestive imagery. In an interview with the magazine, the 41-year-old model says she was willing to take part in the shoot because of Mr Almodovar's 'indelible' artistic mark.

'I only know Pedro socially. However, what I have always liked about Pedro is that his films perfectly combine passion, intelligence and style with a twist of humour – leaving his indelible mark on everything he does,' she said.

'I think that was the essence Sebastian [Faena] drew upon for our cover photo shoot.'

Mike Vick Signs $100 Million, 6 Year Contract With Philly

The Philadelphia Eagles Monday announced that they have agreed to terms on a new six-year deal with their franchise quarterback. The team said there will be a press conference Tuesday afternoon to officially announce the deal.

A four-time Pro Bowl quarterback, Vick has made it back to the top after having his career bottom out. He spent 18 months in federal prison on dogfighting charges and came back to the league as a third stringer with the Eagles in 2009.

Now he is one of the highest paid players in the league with the deal reportedly worth $100 million with $40 million guaranteed.

"I'm very happy we were able to reach an agreement with Michael on this long-term contract," said head coach Andy Reid. "It's a product of all the hard work Michael has done to better himself over the last couple of years, both on and off the field."

Vick led the Eagles to the NFC East title last season but they lost a home playoff game to the eventual Super Bowl champion Green Bay Packers. Philadelphia is a favorite to win the Super Bowl this season and appears to be primed for a run over the next few years and now those hopes are tied to Vick.
"I'm very proud that he has been able to achieve success again in this league, but he'll be the first one to tell you that there is a lot of work yet to be done by him and this team as a whole," Reid said. "And there's no doubt in my mind that he will continue on that path. I give a lot of credit to Joe Banner and Joel Segal for getting this deal done."

With this new deal, Vick will be under contract with the Eagles through the 2016 season. He was previously playing under the one-year franchise tender.

"I think he's become the ultimate leader of this team," tight end Brent Celek said. "He is our leader. He has taken control of the offense. The things that he can do athletically I think you guys already know that but the off-the-field stuff and the leadership that he has on the field he's really taken over."
Vick led the Eagles to the NFC East title last season in his ninth NFL campaign.

Tell us about your role on Jennifer Lopez’s new show, Q’Viva: The Chosen?
My role is to organize and review the materials that have been coming in with our production team. We've been reviewing lots of material through our Youtube channel (Youtube.com/QViva) which is great. There's a really cool opportunity for other people to nominate talent from their own countries or from here in the United States—who are Latino. You can either nominate someone who's sort of well known in their own country or someone who's never been heard before that you think is an amazing talent. It's a great opportunity to showcase them to us and then hopefully we can showcase them to the world!

What kind of talent are you looking for?
It's a huge range of different talent that we're looking for. We're looking for singers, dancers, dance troupes, musicians, and even artists who are more acrobatic. We want artists who embrace the traditional aspects of their countries, but also who have the capacity to do something more contemporary and modern. We want the best of the best—incredibly talented people who have an interesting story, great personality, and who want to succeed in the arts. We want people who love what they do and want to show it to the world. Show us what you can do and show us who you are in the true sense of who you are. We want what you have to offer as a Latino living in the U.S or in your own Spanish-speaking or Portugese-speaking country.
Is there a deadline to submit audition videos on Youtube?
I don't have an exact deadline to give you at the moment. I can tell you that the sooner they put their material up on the Youtube page, the better. I would definitely say as soon as possible. We're going to start rolling cameras in the fall.

Is this a competition exclusively for Latinos?
It's a celebration of the diversity of Latin culture, so we're looking for Hispanic artists here in the States whose roots are Hispanic. The show will show the search within 21 countries. We're counting any country that speaks Spanish or Portugese in the Americas and here in the States. The auditions have been in all three languages.
When will the show premiere?
I don’t have exact dates right now, but I can tell you sometime next year.
J.Lo and Marc's Singing Competition: "The Show Goes On!"
As everyone knows, Jennifer Lopez and Marc Anthony have parted ways. How will that affect the show?
I can't really comment on their personal lives, but I can tell you that eveyuone is incredibly committed to the show. Everyone is really involved in making sure that the show becomes a success.
Why is it the right time to do a show that celebrates Latino culture?
I think the world loves our music. They love our dancing. There's great admiration and respect for our art. And I think this is a good time for embracing diversity and showing that a culture can come together as as whole and put something together that's really special and really unique.

On dealing with her newfound fame: “The year after Avatar was just emotionally overwhelming. I was traveling all over the world, waking up in different time zones. Your body gets exhausted, and by the end of the year I just collapsed.”
On coming close to a total breakdown: “I was in Paris training for Colombiana, sitting in my hotel room, and I couldn’t stop crying. I couldn’t stay awake. I must have slept for an entire month. It took me the rest of the year, even as I was working and shooting Colombiana, to pick myself up. Thank God my family was there.”

The National Meningitis Association, Inc. (NMA) is a national non-profit charity founded in July, 2002. The primary goal of NMA is to educate and increase awareness of meningococcal disease. The founding members were personally affected by the tragedy of meningococcal disease.
NMA’s mission is to educate families, medical professionals and others about bacterial meningitis and prevention approaches to the disease.

In particular, NMA is focused on raising awareness and protection among adolescents and young adults, many of whom can be protected through education and vaccination efforts.

General Meningitis Questions

Q: What is meningitis?

A: Meningitis is an inflammation of the membranes that cover the brain and spinal cord. People sometimes refer to it as spinal meningitis. Meningitis is usually caused by a viral or bacterial infection. Knowing whether meningitis is caused by a virus or bacterium is important because the severity of illness and the treatment differ depending on the cause. Viral meningitis is generally less severe and clears up without specific treatment. But bacterial meningitis can be quite severe and may result in brain damage, hearing loss, or learning disabilities. For bacterial meningitis, it is also important to know which type of bacteria is causing the meningitis because antibiotics can prevent some types from spreading and infecting other people. Before the 1990s, Haemophilus influenzae type b (Hib) was the leading cause of bacterial meningitis. Hib vaccine is now given to all children as part of their routine immunizations. This vaccine has reduced the number of cases of Hib infection and the number of related meningitis cases. Today, Streptococcus pneumoniae and Neisseria meningitidis are the leading causes of bacterial meningitis.

Q: What are the signs and symptoms of meningitis?

A: High fever, headache, and stiff neck are common symptoms of meningitis in anyone over the age of 2 years. These symptoms can develop over several hours, or they may take 1 to 2 days. Other symptoms may include nausea, vomiting, discomfort looking into bright lights, confusion, and sleepiness. In newborns and small infants, the classic symptoms of fever, headache, and neck stiffness may be absent or difficult to detect. Infants with meningitis may appear slow or inactive, have vomiting, be irritable, or be feeding poorly. As the disease progresses, patients of

Bacterial Meningitis Questions

Q: How is bacterial meningitis diagnosed?

A: Early diagnosis and treatment are very important. If symptoms occur, the patient should see a doctor immediately. The diagnosis is usually made by growing bacteria from a sample of spinal fluid. The spinal fluid is obtained by performing a spinal tap, in which a needle is inserted into an area in the lower back where fluid in the spinal canal can be collected. Identification of the type of bacteria responsible is important for selection of correct antibiotics.

Q: Can bacterial meningitis be treated?

A: Bacterial meningitis can be treated with a number of effective antibiotics. It is important, however, that treatment be started early in the course of the disease. Appropriate antibiotic treatment of most common types of bacterial meningitis should reduce the risk of dying from meningitis to below 15%, although the risk is higher among the elderly.

Q: Is bacterial meningitis contagious?

A: Yes, some forms of bacterial meningitis are contagious. The bacteria can mainly be spread from person to person through the exchange of respiratory and throat secretions. This can occur through coughing, kissing, and sneezing. Fortunately, none of the bacteria that cause meningitis are as contagious as things like the common cold or the flu. Also, the bacteria are not spread by casual contact or by simply breathing the air where a person with meningitis has been.
However, sometimes the bacteria that cause meningitis have spread to other people who have had close or prolonged contact with a patient with meningitis caused by Neisseria meningitidis (also called meningococcal meningitis) or Hib. People in the same household or daycare center, or anyone with direct contact with a patient's oral secretions (such as a boyfriend or girlfriend) would be considered at increased risk of getting the infection. People who qualify as close contacts of a person with meningitis caused by N. meningitidis should receive antibiotics to prevent them from getting the disease. This is known as prophylaxis. Prophylaxis for household contacts of someone with Hib disease is only recommended if there is 1 household contact younger than 48 months who has not been fully immunized against Hib or an immunocompromised child (a child with a weakened immune system) of any age is in the household. The entire household, regardless of age, should receive prophylaxis in these cases.

Latino Americans -- 50 million strong and counting -- are both the largest and the fastest-growing minority in the country. Jennifer Lopez and Marc Anthony will launch a new Latin talent show, Q' Viva, despite their pending divorce. A representative of Simon Fuller's XIX Entertainment, the production company who have teamed with the former couple and choreographer Jamie King on the project, announced in a statement that they will begin filming in South American in the fall.

Q'Viva, which is scheduled to debut in 2012, will follow Lopez and Anthony as they travel throughout Latin America seeking out undiscovered singers and dancers. The program is set to be broadcast in several languages across 21 countries in North America, Central America and South America.

New "Forever" Stamp to Honor Latin Stars

The United States Postal Serviced unveiled a new series of " Forever" Stamps to honor Latin music stars.

The postage stamp honors the late Selena, Carlos Gardel, Carmen Miranda, Tito Puente and Celia Cruz. By honoring the five artists, USPS is also honoring five distinct Latin music styles: Tejano, tango, samba, Latin jazz and salsa.
